Inclement Weather fails to put a damper on the 2nd Annual Volunteer Fair

  Fair 09
The Volunteer Fair was a major success in terms of attracting new volunteers for the organizations participating in this year's event.

By Sandi Smalley

Despite the rain and windy weather, 47 organizations throughout Dawson and Pickens counties and within Big Canoe gathered for a very successful 2nd Annual Leadership Big Canoe Volunteer Fair. The Broyles Center was a hub of activity with the various organizations meeting, greeting and educating prospective volunteers on their role in the communities.

The Volunteer Fair is an “End of Year” project for the graduating class of Leadership Big Canoe where we try and match those of us with a willingness to volunteer with the various deserving organizations in our area. Through the efforts of Chuck Zentgraf, head of the Dawson County Team, Sandy Geibel, head of the Pickens County Team and Gary Rhodus, head of the Big Canoe team along with their teammates, we were able to have 47 very deserving organizations come to the Broyles Center on Saturday, March 28. This concentration of organizations gave the people of Big Canoe that were looking for volunteer opportunities, a simple way to explore the various options.

Adding to the excitement were the raffles held every half hour starting at 9:30. LBC was giving away gift certificates donated by Big Canoe for a round of golf for 4 people and dinner for four at the Mountains Grill. There were also gift certificates from Mexicalli Joes, Fuego, gift baskets from Crescent Bank, a backpack stuffed with goodies from Steve Moranos’ Allstate Insurance Company, a Mary Kay Gift Bag donated by Linda Case and a beautiful framed photo of Lake Sconti from Lassie Dye. Steaming Joes donated 3 gift certificates for a beverage of your choice.

Even with 47 Organizations along with their posters, hand-outs and helpers there was ample space due to the outstanding work of Carolyn DeJarnett and her Logistics team. Publicity for this event that included articles in Smoke Signals and Smoke Signals online, flyers, Alpha Box Mailings and posters was provided by the Publicity and Advertising team.

An exit survey completed by the various organizations gave the Fair excellent reviews for the location, the set-up and overall attendance despite the weather.  The only downside was the fact that Big Canoe’s Fire Truck #1 and the BCERT Response truck were lonely sitting by themselves in the pouring rain.

We would like to thank the following Organizations that were in attendance and remind you that even if the Volunteer Fair is over, there is still an overwhelming need for volunteers.
