You can make a difference
By Barbara Schneider The 16 class members are committed to matching the 30--and maybe more by next week--groups attending the April 11 Volunteer Fair with the helping hands they need to continue their good work. But, the Class of 2007 needs your help to make the fair a success. Come to Broyles Center between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Friday, April 11 and welcome the non-profit organization from Big Canoe, Pickens and Dawson counties who give their time and talent to serve the greater north Georgia community.
BCAR volunteers and a few pups-you can't miss the wagging tails--will be the first to greet you outside Broyles Center. Inside you can stop by each of the other 29 tables and meet the folks who enrich the lives of so many people in need. You might want to find out how you can help, too. Who said there's no free lunch! And, as an added incentive, the POA donated four gift certificates--each worth $50--for the new Mountains Grille or the Black Bear Pub. As you visit each table you will receive a ticket for the drawings. One lucky ticket will be selected at each of the 9:30, 10:00, 10:30 and 11:00 drawings. Lend a helping hand Help protect your community by volunteering with the fire department or community emergency response teams. Help save a child by mentoring or working at a shelter. Help take care of the needy and hurting. Help care for lost and abused dogs and cats. Help spare a piece of history. There are so many ways you can make a difference. Here are profiles of just a few of the groups coming to the Volunteer Fair.
Big Canoe Fire Department's volunteer firefighter program is made up a dedicated group of individuals committed to enhancing the safety of Big Canoe residents and property. By supplementing the full and part time paid firefighters of Big Canoe, Big Canoe residents get the benefit of additional firefighting resources at virtually no costs. The program consists of two levels of volunteer firefighters; the Support Role Volunteer Firefighter and, the regular Volunteer Firefighter. The Support role frees up scarce firefighter resources to fight fires or work the accident. In Big Canoe, both programs require a minimum of 120 hours of on going training each year, which is generally acquired through local training (each Thursday night), training offered through Pickens and Dawson counties, state offered GEMA programs and training at the Georgia Fire Academy. Currently Big Canoe has nine Volunteer Firefighters and six Support Role Volunteer Firefighters Dawson County Mentoring Program has been in existence since 1996 and has grown now to nearly 100 students and 50 plus mentors. The program provides care and concern for students through friendships, encouragement, understanding, and appreciation of their unique gifts and talents. Mentors meet with students from 3rd grade to 12th grade in the school setting either one-to-one or in small groups. Mentors are asked to dedicate one class period a week to meet with his/her child. Building a supportive relationship is a primary goal and if you are, "in their corner," it can make a huge difference in the life of a child. Please consider mentoring a student. You may end up being the most dependable person in a child's life! For more information, please call Bindy Auvermann at 706-265-1981.
