This year's class planned and conducted a Volunteer Job Fair, held on April 11th.  Representatives from over 20 groups in Big Canoe, Dawson County and Pickens County were available to talk with interested Big Canoers about volunteer opportunities in their organizations.  In addition, the representatives from the different groups took advantage of the opportunity to share ideas with one another.  The Volunteer Fair was so well-received that it will likely become an annual event.

At the luncheon, in addition to presenting the graduates with certificates of completion, past and present Leadership Big Canoe Board Members were recognized.  Linda Allen, Charlotte McCloskey, Fred Omundson, Bill Saling and Bennett Whipple received plaques for their contributions as founding Board members.  Other past Board members recognized were Bob Crouch, Bill Wilson, Carolyn Littell, George Thurman, Roger Klask, Jud Dye and Peggy Lehmberg.

The purpose of Leadership Big Canoe is to provide education and training designed to give current and emerging community leaders opportunities to become knowledgeable about Big Canoe and to enhance their leadership skills.  The combined total of graduates for the three years the program has been in existence is 69, a number which includes leaders throughout Big Canoe.  The entire POA Board, several HOA Board members, several Chapel Board of Trustees members, and chairs of significant Big Canoe committees have been through the program.

The number of Leadership Big Canoe graduates serving Big Canoe will likely increase. Upon enrolling in the program, each member made a commitment to give at least two years to volunteer activities.  Many were already serving before enrolling in the class.  At the luncheon, graduates were reminded that the real test of the program's success will be the leadership they provide in the future.

Planning for the 2008-09 program is already underway.  Plans and enrollment procedures will be announced early this Summer.
