Another reason to feel good about living in Big Canoe: For the past five years, we have had over 100 dedicated residents willing to invest their time in Leadership Big Canoe (LBC). This program not only educates present and future leaders about the community—it also allows them to give back with involvement and input in major issues which concern Big Canoe.

The 2009-2010 LBC class graduation included 28 members: Phil Anderson, Scott Armentrout, George Bickley, Nancy Bickley, John Bridges, Kay Bridges, Linda Carrig, Chuck Dressler, Peg Ewing, Bill Gibson, Susan Gibson, Alex Henderson, Jim Hollister, Blossom Holyoak, Vicki Hunnicutt, Jean Lomax, John Lomax, Dan Macari, Ardis McCain, Carol Monroe, Mike Monroe, Tim Moran, Larry Ponder, Paul Ray, Jack Schroder, David Shanks, Mike Zblewski and Van Zeiler.

The class met for seven sessions, one Friday morning a month from September-March. Topics included subjects such as the culture and character of Big Canoe, governance, the developer’s role and interaction with local governments.

The class was divided into four groups and assigned a group project. Group meetings and work were accomplished outside the regular LBC meetings.

The four projects involved: 1) Big Canoe’s division between Pickens and Dawson counties; 2) Main Gate replacement; 3) Steve Tate/Yellow Creek Character Area Development; and 4) Developer relations, trails and emergency response within Big Canoe.

Each group gave a 20-minute presentation about their topic at the April 2 graduation event. Excellent suggestions for solving problems, such as traffic back-up at the Main Gate during peak times, were introduced for POA consideration. One of the creative solutions for this problem involves emailing guests bar coded, scan able entry passes prior to coming to Big Canoe (done by concerts and college athletic events for parking).

Graduates report that the class was well worth the time invested and that they got a lot out of it. Everyone is invited to participate in an LBC future class – the next session will begin in fall 2010. Contact one of the LBC Board member below, or for more information check out the LBC Web site at www.leadershipbigcanoe.org.

LBC 2010 Board members are Brian Roberts, chairman; Phyllis Deane, vice-chairman; Mike Essman, HOA rep; John Farris, secretary; Ellis Mills, Chapel Rep; Dick Scharf, treasurer; Bill Wilson-POA rep and Helen Buckelew, at-large.

Leadership Big Canoe begins its fifth year on September 11. The eight-month course is designed to help current and emerging community leaders become more knowledgeable about Big Canoe and its history as well as the future challenges both inside and outside of our gates.

The LBC Board of Directors consists of Chairman Brian Roberts, Vice-Chairman Phyllis Deane, Treasurer Dick Scharf, Secretary John Farris, POA representative Bill Wilson, HOA representative Mike Essman; Chapel representative Ellis Mills and Helen Buckelew.

The board has been meeting since the first of June to organize and plan programs and classes for the, to date, 29 Big Canoe residents who will be participating in the 2009-2010 LBC classes.

  • November 6, Effective Communications
  • December 4, Big Canoe Governance #1
  • January 8, 2010, Big Canoe Governance #2
  • February 5, Developer’s Role

Class members enrolled in the 2009-2010 LBC include: Phil Anderson, W. This list illustrates that residents of Big Canoe are willing and ready to continue--through their leadership--to maintain this self-governed property-owners association community that works co-operatively with the developer.

We are lucky to have such incredibly talented residents in our community willing to work for its continued success.

The classes will run from 9 a.m. until noon in the Dogwood Room at the Clubhouse as Lake Sconti.
