Welcome to Leadership Big Canoe 2012-2013

Dear Big Canoe Property Owner:

The purpose of Leadership Big Canoe is to provide specific education and hands-on training for potential community leaders in a volunteer environment. Opportunities for class participation are an important part of each class. Each class member will participate in a project that is selected by the class members during the first two months — these projects are designed to address issues, problems or concerns in the community and develop innovative solutions to improve the Big Canoe living experience. Previous class projects made contributions in areas such as Governance, 911 Dual Address Resolution, Front Gate Evaluation, Volunteer Fairs and Aging In Place. Many of these projects have been continued to resolution or implementation by the HOA, POA and/or Big Canoe Chapel. Classes meet in the Dogwood Room at the Sconti Clubhouse from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and include lunch. A modest $45 fee is charged to cover meeting expenses, including refreshments — lunches are paid by participants at each class.  The 2012–13 schedule for the 8th class is shown below:

  • Introduction, Orientation, Assign Class Project – September 14, 2012
  • The Culture and Character of Big Canoe: Past, Present, and Future – October 12, 2012
  • Effective Communications – November 9, 2012
  • Big Canoe Governance – January 11, 2013
  • Big Canoe Operations – February 8, 2013
  • The Developer’s Role and Future Plans – March 8, 2013
  • How Big Canoe Interfaces with Local Communities – April 12, 2013
  • Graduation Luncheon – April 26, 2013

Perhaps the best indicator of the quality of the program comes from some of the comments of the 165 graduates of the program’s previous seven classes.

  • “I believe this program was very well organized and professional, and was an excellent start for a long-term leadership program for Big Canoe.”
  • “I was hesitant to take this class. I thought it would be BC propaganda. I was wrong! It was great. Thank you for your hard work in putting it together.”
  • “The opportunity to gain the knowledge specified in the objectives was excellent and impressive.”
  • “I learned how my former leadership techniques work in a volunteer environment.”
